Sight Words

Sight words are those words that children need to be able to read on sight and recognize instantly. Good readers do not sound out sight words or use context clues to read them.

While sight words make up a sizable amount of what adults read (in the newspaper, for example), they are a huge part of children's reading, especially in the lower grades.

Total knowledge and mastery of these words will make an amazing difference in your child's ability to not only read most of what he comes across in school, but to read it well and with understanding.

In my book, Tutor Your Child to Reading Success, I provide six sight word assessments (tests) and explain to parents how to teach these important words by playing games. Each assessment is based on grade level, but there is one set of sight words that every student should know: 100 Most Common Sight Words.

I recommend that parents check to see whether or not their child knows the 100 Most Common Sight Words. Give your child this list to read. If they don't know them- quickly, thorougly, completely- you might want to get your hands on a copy of my book!

Seriously, your child MUST learn ALL of the sight words. There is no getting around it.
