Jan 5, 2009, Reading! Reading! Reading!

I came across this great article on Slate about how parents can help their children become good readers. Reading is my absolute favorite subject to study and teach, and it is crucial for academic success. I spend A LOT of time telling parents that reading with their children is really the best way to spend their time and energy; it's nice when an expert agrees! Good advice and examples. Check it out!

Dec 17, 2008, "Yeah, but in other countries..."

One of the arguments that pro-homework people often use for more homework is that American children NEED hours and hours of homework because other countries do a lot of homework and they are soooo much smarter than our kids. Research does support the effectiveness of excessive homework- nor our students' lack of smarts. Here is an article that underscores, once again, the fact that you can't believe everything "the experts" tell you. How about listening to a concerned and caring parent?
